One of the most misunderstood and discriminated ethnic people is the Roma. What we know is that they migrated to Europe, from India, in the 14th century. During communism, Romania had the highest number of Roma, though today they, and other Romanians, can travel freely throughout Europe because of Romania's membership in the European Union.
The Roma’s way of life is different and because of this, they are resented and despised. There are concerted efforts by way of NGOs attempting to break stereotypes and getting the Roma assimilated and accepted in mainstream society. This is quite a complex issue which I will leave to the hands of the scholars.
As I traveled throughout Transylvania, I met a wide range of Roma. Here I share some of my encounters and memories.
A family, living in a back room, told me these 4 or 5 story houses were being built by two brothers who were away in Germany. They sent was told that two Roma brothers were abroad in Germany, sending home to family.
